This process has given my students a chance to make the schoolyard a more inviting place for people and animals. In doing so, we are addressing curriculum goals in language arts, science and math as well as the physical and emotional benefits of active, outdoor learning. By taking an active role in enhancing the quality of their schoolyard, they have also taken an active role in their learning as well as educating the broader community.

After A Fall
Assisting with the Burning Need in the Community
With spring weather arriving early this year, the end of February heralded the closing of LREC’s 2019–20 burn season window. Fortunately, the weather conditions were shifting for our bottomland prairies to be able to dry out, and reach the favorable winds and humidity needed for a controlled burn. On February 21st we were able to perform our planned annual burn with the assistance of volunteers and the Ladue Fire Department.
Building Purpose in Our Lives
Yale professor Martin Hagglund argues in his new book This Life that the purpose of our lives depends on our commitments. Framed another way, the lives we are trying to lead, the institutions we are trying to build, and the community we are trying to achieve are all reflected in the projects we undertake. As a community resource, LREC exists to enable and support these commitments, with an eye toward building an ecologically strong community.
