Jan Buley (keynote speaker at this year’s Litzsinger Teacher Conference) will be facilitating LREC’s Place-based Learning workshop this summer!
Jan comes to us as an experienced facilitator of the Foxfire Approach which centers on the work of John Dewey and his historical perspective on experiential learning.
Focusing on a set of rich core practices, the Foxfire Approach has proven effective in the implementation of place-based learning. Throughout the week we’ll be exploring the ‘bones’ of the Foxfire program in various ways. You will be invited to reflect (and squirm!) about your lived experiences as teachers and learners. Modeling the Foxfire Approach, we’ll be doing a great deal of experiential reflecting, reading, writing and sharing. You’ll need a journal and an open mind. Participants are asked to bring a lunch each day and purchase the book, Experience and Education: The 60th Anniversary Edition. The book is also available in Kindle format.
You will come away from the week with a plan for implementing the Foxfire Approach along with LREC staff support through the 2017–18 school year. Additional school year expectations include:
- Class visits to Litzsinger Road Ecology Center
- LREC staff visits to your school
- Participation in relevant professional development
- Sharing your experience
- Building your school team
- Community recognition
